From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2–Make room for another satisfying episode in the escapades of lovable Elephant (aka Gerald) and Piggie. This time the best buddies star in a witty metafictional romp replete with visual gags, such as Piggie hanging from a speech bubble and Elephant blocking the author's name on the title page. Willems revs up the fun when the friends realize that someone is watching. Who can it be? Cautious Gerald asks, “A monster?” while savvy Piggie answers, “No. It is...a reader! A reader is reading us!” Mirth ensues as the delightful creatures comprehend a newfound power: “If the reader reads out loud,” they can make the reader say words. Piggie decides upon “Banana” and Gerald's sidesplitting laughter proves contagious for all involved. But, when Gerald learns that books end, with Piggie demonstrating by turning the bottom corner of the page to see how many are left, he shouts, “This book is going too fast! I have more to give!” Not to worry–the ever-resourceful Piggie has Gerald ask, “Will you please read us again?” Beginning readers will grant Gerald's request, while grown-ups will marvel at Willems's extraordinary ability to animate his personality-packed gray and pink characters with the widest range of emotions, all drawn with the simplest of line.–Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schoolsα(c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist

In their latest pairing, Elephant and Piggie are finally ready to get meta. Realizing that their trademark blank background is, in fact, a page, the duo has a blast convincing the reader to say funny things out loud—until Piggie mentions that the book will soon end. Cue Elephant’s existential crisis: “WHEN WILL THE BOOK END!?!” From there on, it’s a cute—but never too heady—play on the physical object that the reader is holding, including a bit where Piggie appears to flip the pages forward to get a sense of how much time they have left. Willems’ satisfying (if self-serving) solution? Read it again! Preschool-Grade 2. --Daniel Kraus

I am not a fan of the Pidgeon books by Mo Willems although I know children love them, but I adore this book and love reading it to my granddaughter. Very silly and fun.

Do you know what the best book is? We think it is the Elephant and Piggie book, We Are In A Book. We really like this book because it is funny. It is funny when Gerald and Piggie realize they are characters in a book and are being watched by a reader. Also, the book is silly because when Gerald and Piggie come up with the idea to have the reader say whatever they want, they make the reader say, “banana.” These are some reasons why we enjoy this book and other Elephant and Piggie books so much, they are great!** This review was written by my First Grade class. They love these books!

Piggie and Gerald books truly helped my child grasp reading. We were struggling in PreK and Kindergarten and a friend let us borrow several of these books by Mo Willems. In no time she was improving, laughing, and feeling much more confident. We ordered several more. By first grade she was in the top of her class for reading, her scores and confidence improved drastically, and she came in 3rd for her grade in their annual reading competition. I know that much of it was just natural development, but I honestly do also credit these books because they keep pages short, introduce big words slowly, and are repetitive in a fun way. They also touch on emotions in an intelligent way that creates critical thinking about situations these kids come across (like patience, pretending, others' perspectives, unique differences, etc.). I give these books as gifts now and can't say enough good things!

My 7 year old Autistic son loves these books...we didn't buy him a reading curriculum for homeschooling...we buy him an Elephant and Piggie book once a week...he learned how to hold the book while reading and reads page numbers now too...just purchased the Elephant and Piggie finger puppets because sometimes we take turns reading as the characters too. The Elephant and Piggie books are comical and he has come to love reading. Reading can be difficult for him because he has a hard time sitting still but the Elephant and Piggie books intrigue him and we will sit and read 2 to 3 of them daily right now...He loves the idea that Elephant and Piggie are the same characters and in all the books...also that Doctor Cat and Pigeon have made special appearances just like in the Thank You Book...He thinks Hippo's sister is hilarious...

My 6-year-old grandson really enjoyed reading this book. I didn't realize he was already a fan of the author and these characters. He found it especially clever when the characters realized that being in a book meant they could make the reader say whatever they wanted. He also loved acting out the HEE HEE HEEs and HA HA HAs, and enjoyed the characters' expressions. The author drew his attention to the fact that books can contain parts such as word bubbles, page numbers, etc.Really cute and a good purchase that I think he'll enjoy every time he's at Grandma's.

We love Elephant and Piggie around here. This book exceeded my expectations. It is funny for kids because of the hysteria that ensues after the characters realize that they control us and what we say. Their interaction with the readers is very playful and delightful. On a deeper note, it toys with a theme of mortality and existence. There is an dark urgency toward the end of the book as they realize that the story is almost finished and anxiety about what will happen next. Additionally, while they realized that they can control us by making us say funny words, readers realize that they can also control them (and their very existence!) by whether they decide to read the book again. Deep stuff for philosophy nerds, but a fun read for the kiddies. Can't lose with this book!

This book is FABULOUS! it's funny, witty and just plain enjoyable (to the 'reader' and those being read to). My reluctant reader will beg to read it every night....as will his cousins and siblings. It's fun for me to read even. We are all cracking up at it. A book that can get teens laughing with children they are reading it to and everyone enjoying a book....that's a huge WIN for this teacher's bookshelf! one of my absolute favorite Elephant and Piggie books! Just absolutely delightful!

This book was a birthday present to my 5 y.o. granddaughter. We read this book together many times on her birthday. We both giggled and giggled thru the book each time we read it. I gave her two other Mo Willems books, which were great, but this was OUR favorite. What a wonderful time we had reading this book. Thank you Mo!!! I can't wait to see her again, so we can read this book and giggle!!!!

I just bought this for my Kindergarten grandson for his birthday. If he lived closer, I would have given it to him the day it arrived. It is my new favorite. I only have a few Elephant and piggy books so far, so have been reading many reviews trying to decide which to buy next. What I am noticing is that when someone gives less than a 5 star rating, it really doesn't mean they don't like it, it merely means it's not one of their favorites or that the age of the child is not quite right. That seems to be the beauty of these books. The expressions on the characters' faces are so good in the illustrations, that even a non-reader can enjoy them on their own. As a Kindergarten teacher and grandmother, (First, I have to buy 2 copies of each) what I like best is that we love to read these together, each of us being one of the characters.
