What lies Below is a gripping story of a Gilly, a woman with many secrets, and the kidnapping of Zoe, a precocious 3-year-old girl living with her father Jake. They meet Gilly at the café where she works as a waitress after giving up her livelihood as an architect and coming to a small Texas town to basically hide. We learn all of her secrets as the story unwinds. Gilly has dreams what foretell of bad things to happen and one day she sees Zoe being kidnapped by a woman she feels is not her mother. The unraveling of the kidnapping and the various characters had me reading the book through in one day. I could not put it down.Barbara Sissel has woven incredible backgrounds for her characters that bring them to life, albeit sometimes a bit shady, but endearing. Reading was like peeling an onion with many layers uncovering hidden truths. The descriptions of the town and the interactions of the various citizens is top notch. You’ll see how the sheriff and others react as they find out some of the secrets of Gilly and others. Jake is a fantastic father to Zoe and is torn apart by losing his daughter. You feel the anguish of this loving man as he struggles to find the answers to his daughter’s disappearance.
Barbara Taylor Sissel has done it again with her newest suspense novel, "What Lies Below". As the title implies, there's a lot going on under the surface of these characters' lives. Once you meet them, you won't easily forget them. Complex individuals, all, with their own histories and secrets. Gilly, the waitress is running away from her past in Houston. Jake, the Dad, is devastated by the abduction of his three-year-old daughter by a stranger. He is brought full circle when he faces that in the beginning, he had wished that she never be born. Complicated lives on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns that keep you breathless--and reading.
I have been a dedicated reader of everything Barbara Taylor Sissel has written and it's a joy to see her storytelling evolve and become so sophisticated. What Lies Below is the latest and the best so far. It's a gripping story of secrets, fear and suspense. I started reading this book while I was recovering from surgery so my reading time was limited initially but I could barely put it down once the story got going. The characters are well developed. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, the direction changed!You won't be disappointed, trust me!
This book was something different. It started out slow but got interesting by chapter 5. I ended up binge reading it to figure out what happened.
What do I do now? I just took a fast ride through 9 Barbara Taylor Sissel books, and I understand 10 won't be available till 2019. So what do I do now?It's going to be a very long year waiting!!
But a huge story with a happy ending. A quick read. Don't think I would like dreaming of future events thoubh.
