About the Author
Carl Barks (1901-2000) spent most of his life in Oregon. In 1987, he was one of the three inaugural inductees in the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame (along with Eisner and Jack Kirby). He's also a Disney Legend.

I thought that Carl Barks had given up on the big adventures and was sticking with just 10-page stories but here in volume 19 we get several more longer stories. There is a serious time overlap between volume 18 (The Lost Peg Leg Mine) and this volume. The stories in volume 18 were published between September 1956 and July 1958. This volume includes July 1957 to September 1958. The reason for this is that Fantagraphics recently made the decision to print the stories in the order in which Barks created them, not when they were published, which means that, for whatever reason, Dell was sitting on some stories for quite a while before publishing them. It really doesn’t matter because each story is self-contained with little to no continuity besides the introduction of new characters.This volume features the 18-page “Black Pearls of Tabu Yama†as well as the 26-page Forbidden Valley. It’s clear that Fantagraphics uses the catchiest story title rather than the best story to name their volumes because I’d say that Forbidden Valley was much better. Tabu Yama is essentially a story about the ducks trying to dislodge their boat which has become wedged into a hole at the base of an active volcano. Forbidden Valley has the duck family on the hunt for the rare Razor Wasps in a valley of dinosaurs. Now THAT’S exciting. The rest of the book is mostly 10 pagers with a couple shorter stories and the 20-page “Donald Duck and the Titanic Antsâ€.Carl Barks stories are always intelligently written and have that rare quality of conveying information in an entertaining manner. In “The Tenderfoot Trapâ€, Uncle Scrooge tries to heat up a can by wrapping it loosely with greasewood shavings and lighting the whole thing up. Barks was always including these little life hacks into his stories and I bet they worked. I would also add that Huey, Dewey and Louis had a lot of admirable qualities and would be good role models for young readers. Even Scrooge and Donald had their moments, particularly Scrooge who had an unshakable tenacity. He was also a money hungry miser but nobody’s perfect.Included in this collection is a story featuring Gyro Gearloose, three with Gladstone Gander, a couple with Daisy and a whole bunch with Uncle Scrooge. There is also the first appearance by a pig faced villain named Argus McSwine. McSwine wasn’t really a specific character but was more of a template that Barks would occasionally use when he needed a baddy. There are stories of Donald trying to hold down a job as a hotel manager (Sagmore Springs Hotel), a mailman (The Persistent Postman), a baker (The Half-Baked Baker) and a milkman (Donald the Milkman). Other times, he’s trying to win a competition as in The Tenderfoot Trap, Battle of the Echoes, Old Froggie Catapult and Ski Race. Barks reuses a lot of ideas and a bunch of these stories are rehashes of older stories but the high quality of art and writing is such that I never cared whether or not each story was a unique snowflake.I always say that I’ve never seen a bad story by Carl Barks but I have to admit that “Donald Duck and the Titanic Ants†is about as close as it comes. The story centers around a scientist who has created a shrink and growth ray and he creates giant ants, with no malice intended. The story just feels completely out of place in the world that Barks has crafted and it’s not a great tale regardless. Even with one clunker I give this collection the same score as the previous 14 books in this series, which is 5 stars. I don’t know that there has ever been another comic creator with such consistent high level output over such a long period of time. I look forward to “The Mines of King Solomonâ€, due out in April of next year, and I have no doubt I’ll be giving out another perfect score.
A volume with 14 stories covering all Bark’s famous duck character. This volume runs Donald and Co. on many imaginary adventures viz. through a valley of dinosaurs in the “Forbidden Valleyâ€, battling human sized ants in “The Titanic Antsâ€, going round the world in 80 minutes (and stopping on every continent to grab a proof) in a rocket made by Gyro Gearloose, grabbing a stone in the “Wishing Stone Island†to be a millionaire overnight. Overall, this volume contains somewhat less of Bark’s stereotypical ending where Donald is, for most part, the loser. In fact, “Donald the Milkman†has a surprise ending! Nevertheless, titles like “The Half Baked bakerâ€, “The Persistent Postmanâ€, “The Tenderfoot Trap†represents typical Donald Duck affairs. The last one “Water Ski Race†is an apt funny ending to the volume where Donald despite winning the race fails to get a hand on the “prizeâ€.In this volume, there are three stories with a three panel, two frame picture setup which differs from Barks’ traditional four panel, two frame style. There is plenty of food for thought for science lovers with supersonic rockets, utilizing steam power in “The Black Pearls of Tabu Yamaâ€, creation of gigantic ants with scientific gadgets, playing with echos. Uncle scrooge and Gladstone appeared intermittently – with Uncle Scrooge getting the better of both Donald and Gladstone in the “Battle of the Echos†– even Gladstone’s luck couldn’t help him.With this one, the total volume count printed by Fantagraphics hits 15 which is midway through the 30 volume series. Congratulations to Fantagraphics for reaching the halfway mark and let’s hope they keep the good work going!
The tile says it all. I grew up reading the Carl Barks Disney comics in the late '40's, early '50's. So this collection brought back many pleasant memories. His stories never talked down to his audience, and I leaned a lot from them as a kid. Loved the artwork as well. It was the golden age of comics for kids as far as I was concerned. Have acquired several of these collections.
I was able to read some of these old stories for the first time. I'm grateful that a complete collection is becoming available. I bought the Kindle version, which is easy to store and keep track of and doesn't get tattered.
I am a Disney Fan. I think the stories by Carl Barks are the best. Amazon has a collection of Carl Barks Donald Duck stories from when I was a child. Each book is a hardbound collection of stories by Carl Barks, they are well done.
Carl Barks was a artistic genius. His stories about Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, as well as Uncle Scrooge and Gladstone Gander were fun and interesting for both children and adults. The tales in this volume take the cast to various parts of the globe but most of the adventures take part in Duckburg. This would make a great Christmas gift for most children.
Wonderful that these books are available, what prevents me from a 5 star rating is that it would have been great if these had been given the prestige format of the Don Rosa Volumes.
