Rather good book. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I find all the of the characters majorly flawed in their own unique ways. I'd recommend the book to just about anyone, Christian or not. Three stars for me however as Theo didn't live up to my expectations. Forgiveness means more than knowing someone is sorry, especially as a Christian. I found that as commonly expected, we forgive, but leave out the most important thing, unconditional love. So for me, forgiving your wife is one thing, but not really forgiving Chris is another.. the two go hand in hand. Biggest blunder I couldn't get over was how he could not include Chris in his own child's life... I'm sorry but that is unwarranted and selfish. That decision shouldn't be based on anything but what's right and best for the baby, not him and his wife. So at the ending I was just left upset saying what?! I see that there is a fourth book in the series that covers this but I just don't have the heart to read it and get annoyed at how they are behaving when all Chris wants is to be apart of his sons life. Flawed characters is as best as it gets.
I really enjoyed this story. As others have noted, it is a powerful story of forgiveness and redemption. I don't understand how all of the editing issues were left resolved. There are several errors including basic usage, punctuation, capitalization, and verb tense. The punctuation of dialogue is so poor that at times I had to re-read passages to determine who was speaking. I am an English teacher, and I realize I am probably more cognizant of these issues because I edit hundreds of papers, but the mistakes are basic and blatant, which is too bad because it takes away from an otherwise well-written story.
*What Sandra Thought*“Private Sins†is a controversial story of love, lust, envy, and adultery. Kelly is a preacher’s wife who cheated on her husband because she got tired of playing second fiddle to his responsibilities to the church. She had an affair with an ex-boyfriend who happened to be the first elder of their church. That affair resulted in a baby. She will not be able to hide the paternity of her child for long though. Buddha once said, “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth.â€Wow, this story had my emotions feeling like they were in a blender (all mixed up). After reading the synopsis I had my mind made up that I would hate this woman for what she did to husband and family. And I did for about 80% of the book. I just could not empathize with Kelly. But then her husband Theo was reflecting on the situation and said, “There was something about losing the most important thing in your life to make you appreciative of what you have…†Then I had my “Come to Jesus Moment†and realized that Kelly was only human and we all are susceptible to fall into temptation and make mistakes. By then end I was rooting for Kelly’s husband to forgive her. “Private Sins†by Brenda Barrett has shown me that the lesson is that you can still make mistakes and be forgiven.
Theo and Kelly's story really makes you sit back and think, what if this was your story. Me, being a man, I have to give Theo credit for a being stronger and more spiritual man than I could have been if faced with this situation. I really respected his character a lot. I know that this story happens everyday in this world, but people handle things differently. Theo seems like a man who loves his wife and family wholeheartedly. Kelly on the other hand didn't deserve the love of her husband after what she did to him. She had unprotected sex with another man and got pregnant. In the beginning of the book, her and her sister pretty much were joking around about the whole thing. She was asked if she loved the other guy and she wasn't sure. Really? Seems like she was dishonest with Theo the whole time until he found out. As I stated earlier, Theo is a strong man. Stronger than most.
By: Brenda BarrettPublished By: Jamaica TreasuresAge Recommended: AdultReviewed By: Arlena DeanSeries: Three Rivers #1Rating: 5Review:"Private Sins" by Brenda Barrett was indeed a wonderful read. This was my first read by this author and I was very impressed with its realistic storyline that deals with 'betrayal, adultery, love and forgiveness.' The characters were all very well developed and well portrayed, colorful and believable. In the end you are only left wanting the entire series: 'Three Rivers.'Book Descriptions:"Kelly was in deep trouble; her husband was a pastor and she his loyal first lady. Well she was...until she had an affair with Chris; the first elder of their church. And now she was pregnant with his child. Could she keep the secret from her husband and pretend that all was well? Or should she confess her private sin and let the chips fall where they may?""Private Sins" was definitely a novel that was hard to put down and will leave you with only a good moral thoughts behind this awesome story that I would recommend as a excellent read.
This was a difficult book to read. A part of me hated Kelly and yet I understood where she was coming from. Kelly affair was a cry out for help. She felt neglected by her husband and Chris made her feel special. What I could not rectify in this story was how Kelly and Theo made the choice to exclude baby Mark from his biological father's life. Every child deserves to in now where they come from. There will be a time when Mark will want answers. He may even second guess Theo's love for him or even feel like an outsider. Furthermore I felt that Chris was made a scapegoat. Yes he was wrong to engage in a affair but Kelly just as culpable. When Kelly made the statement she hated Chris I bristle a little bit. How does this emotion bare testament in her her relationship with baby Mark? This book really makes you think and I appreciated the underpinning of this story. It was about forgiveness, spiritualism and family. Despite my trepidation I really enjoyed reading this book.
