Review

"A wonderful blending of the modernmissionary narrative mixed with a traditional comic style, humor, andfeel-good moments throughout, Dendo by Brittany Long Olsen is thefirst-of-its-kind autobiographical Mormon missionary graphic novel.Visually engaging, Olsen brings to life her missionary service withsimple and elegant illustration in a unique and transcendent experience. We witness her journey from the ups and downs of the MTC, struggleswith companionships, and burgeoning bike skills to the inevitabledenouement of her time as a sister missionary; all while helping uslearn a little Japanese culture along the way." - Association for Mormon LettersWinner of the 2015 Association for Mormon Letters Award - Comics"...One of the most unique, humorous and genuinely insightful glimpses out thereinto what it means to be a full-time missionary for The Church of JesusChrist of Latter-day Saints...Panel by panel, page by page, each little vignettebuilds on top of the last to show the daily trials and triumphs thatcome with being a missionary assigned to a country where they usebackward syntax, eat mayonnaise on spaghetti and are predominantly notChristian. That includes all the unfun bits, too, because life in the mission field isn't always sunshine and baptisms. That said, Olsen manages to keep things light. Heroptimism, self-deprecating wit and ability to always find the spiritualsilver lining are just a few reasons this book is a joy to read." - Jeff Peterson, Deseret News

Read it in one day. This perfectly captures the essence and the ups and downs of any missionary's experience. I served in Salt Lake City, which is worlds away from Tokyo, but I found it was easy to relate to Sister Long's experiences and was surprised how closely they mirrored my own and other missionaries I knew. I felt the joys and the sorrows of her service and feel better and closer to God. For anyone who is curious about what it's really like to be a Mormon missionary this is it. The art style is simple and attractive, evoking a feeling of simplicity that brings with it a sense of confidence and intimacy, a feeling of closeness and confidence that made me feel like a member of her family. The medium, combining word and text in comic form, speaks more than either could do individually and is a perfect fit for this type of memoir. Sister Long writes for anyone interested in Japanese culture from a Western perspective. Very informative and stereotype-destroying. I just want to go and do everything she wrote about- especially the Studio Ghibli museum. I'm glad this book exists, and I will hold onto it to share with my future children as they grow and begin to think about missions themselves. All I've got to personally give them is my audio journal where I ramble about crazy things half the time, so having this is something I am sure they will be grateful for. I've never read anything like it before, and I doubt I will ever find anything like it again. A truly unique volume that deserves to be read by anyone.

This book is fascinating. It's fun to watch the author learn and grow the longer she is on her mission. The art is simple yet visually fun to look at. And it is a BIG book! There are entries for every single day, and some are two pages long, so it's a beast of a book, but so worth it. When I start reading this, I have the hardest time putting it down. It's fun to see an entire day's entry boiled down into a few concrete thoughts. I'm also enjoying comparing it to my own experience when I was on my mission. It's helped me remember all of the wacky people you meet and the odd things they say.I bought this book for me and my kids. The comic format is so compelling and easy to read and it will definitely get them excited to serve missions of their own. My oldest son is on a mission right now in Pittsburgh and I can't wait to share this book with him when he gets home!

This book came recommended to me. I've never been a graphic novel type of person, and this isn't really that in the sense that it's a girl's journal, not a story. That said, it's a fun way to learn about both life in Japan and life as a missionary. I find myself browsing several pages a day, just enjoying the journey with her.

What a great book! Reading about Long Shimai's many trials and successes took me back to my mission in Tokyo 25 years ago. Her story reminded me that growth comes best when we allow ourselves to be stretched in the service of others.Part of me wants to give this book away to others to read, but I think I'll hold onto it so my children can learn from it as they approach missionary age in a few years.ありがとうロング姉妹!

An easy read that portrays the experience of LDS missionaries in general, and missionaries in Japan in particular. Both I and my soon-to-depart missionary son devoured it in a couple of days. Olsen captures the essence of the missionary experience using cultural observations, personal and spiritual experiences, and healthy doses of irony and humor. Well done!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a clever journal on the experiences of an LDS missionary in a foreign land. As a former missionary myself (though on the other side of the world from Japan), I found much to relate to: cultural differences (and similarities) and food and experiences with people and places. I would recommend this to anyone interested in travel or those who would like to get a sense of what a missionary goes through. There is humor, sorrow and some poignant observations.

Well done, and an innovative approach, using a graphic novel to present her missionary experiences. I was also on a mission, but 40 years ago and in Germany, yet I found a hundred topics and incidents that resonated with my experience.

Great book. Even if you didn't serve an LDS mission teaches great lessons in love acceptance and trusting in Gods love for his children.
