About the Author
Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. After graduation from high school, he spent a year in Mexico with his father, then a year studying at Columbia University. His first poem in a nationally known magazine was "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," which appeared in Crisis in 1921. In 1925, he was awarded the First Prize for Poetry of the magazine Opportunity, the winning poem being "The Weary Blues," which gave its title to his first book of poems, published in 1926. As a result of his poetry, Mr. Hughes received a scholarship at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where he won his B.A. in 1929. In 1943, he was awarded an honorary Litt.D. by his alma mater; he has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (1935), a Rosenwald Fellowship (1940), and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Grant (1947). From 1926 until his death in 1967, Langston Hughes devoted his time to writing and lecturing. He wrote poetry, short stories, autobiography, song lyrics, essays, humor, and plays. A cross section of his work was published in 1958 as The Langston Hughes Reader.

Langston Hughes is best known for his poetry and as an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance, but his semi-autobiographical novel about a boy growing up in Stanton (Lawrence) Kansas is an important account of life in the segregated north in the early 20th century. Rather than write a memoir about his own more affluent and educated family, Hughes surrounds Sandy with types: his washer-woman grandmother, Aunt Hagar, his mother Angee, maid to the severe Mrs. RIce and his father, the roaming, musical Jimboy, his aunt Harriet who becomes a somewhat successful blues singer, and aunt Tempy who has deserted her family for life imitating the white middle class. The book moves forward as Sandy questions and begins to understand the life around him, but it is more a series of set scenes than a fully-realized novel, with chapters on the many aspects of life: the carnival, church, school. I have taught this book to Kansas college students who had no idea that such conditions existed outside the South (if they even thought about segregation at all). Hughes is a terrific writer. The chapter "Dance" is Hughes at this poetic best, creating with words the jazz world he loved.
This is the first Langston Hughes novel I've read and for a hero of mine, poetically, he didn't disappoint with prose. NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER is a coming of age novel about a boy named Sandy and the colorful cast of characters that surround him while he grows into a young man. There's his no 'count father, Jimboy; his silly and gullible mother, Anjee; his wild and free aunt, Harriet; his staunch and starched aunt Tempy; and last but not least, his grandmother who ironically in the novel is called Aunt Hagar. Each has a quirk which makes for a plot and a prop to bring Sandy further along to manhood. The reading is easy, relaxed and authentic. And the topics covered are controversial. But Langston paints a proper picture of the time period and lays a foundation for who the reader will ultimately see in Sandy. The only thing I disliked about the novel was at times, it just felt like I was watching a normal life go by. Not drab, mind you, but not a lot of action. Good dialogue, I guess, but maybe not enough tension. I'm not saying I wanted to see explosions and car chases--because this wasn't an action and adventure novel--I would have liked to see more tension. Like when Harriet came home late, we see the mother's switch but not the argument or the beating itself even. There were more instances but I don't want to put out spoilers.If you like Langston Hughes' voice, you'll love NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER. Just don't expect any heated climaxes.
I have resisted the urge to read this wonderful book from cover to cover and paced myself to only read a chapter or two (or three) at a time. I know that when I finish reading this book there will be a space in my soul that this book has filled, and am in no hurry to finish it. I I could only write like Langston Hughes, I might find a suitable replacement for the place in my heart this book has found. I am indebted to Mr. Hughes for including me into the lives of this wonderful, loving family.
This book is in essence 'unwritten black history'; the inconvenient truth that requires scratching the surface of American acceptability to reveal the basis of its unacceptable past practices. Fiction might be its category but any reader would detect the non-fiction of the story - i.e. the author's youth. I will write no spoilers here but whether black or white, it is a book well worth reading as it gives clarity to what is generally suspected but not admitted. At the same time in the context of fictional recount, the book enables the reader to enjoy the storyline without necessitating judgment of the time period in which it is set. Mr. Langston Hughes incorporates poetic descriptions throughout his prose that paint pictures of landscapes and events that despite being foreign to the reader, makes the reader feel present and familiar with the life and lifestyle of its characters. I stand by its highest recommendation to anyone wishing to broaden their library, in particular, on black literature.
I bought this book for my high school daughter who loves poetry, but has not been exposed to Langston Hughes. I took a chance and bought this for her 16th birthday. I had previously purchase The Gorgeous Nothings: Emily Dickinson's Envelope Poems as a gift for her last summer. So while my mid-western middle-class daughter appears to have very little in common with Langston Hughes, she adores his poetry. She carries this book around to all her classes, and steals away to read a few pages to read a few pages. Please consider this great gift.
Reading Hughes is essential to understanding some of the hidden aspects of early and mid 20th century American history. He can be repetitious, and does not always "sing" in his poems, but he usually provides energy, involvement, and not a small amount of anger. Topics cover city life, the Harlem Renaissance, the Spanish Civil War, WWII at home and abroad, the Civil Rights Movement, and many personal events. The compilers have added many valuable notes and references, though a few more for some of the unusual word choices and period slang would have been helpful. This should be with the books of all lovers of poetry and history.
A classic of African American literature. Tells the story of a young boy growing up in a racially divided Kansas during the second decade of the twentieth century. Well defined characters and we'll written dialect make this book an important piece of literature. Highly recommended.
